Some specks of dust were what they seemed

But in truth they were tiny eggs

Inside each one was a spark of life

With three dozen tiny legs

One little speck began to crack

And became a caterpillar

She looked around and saw the leaves

And thought, I am a hungry pillar!

She saw her friends go trekking off

To the closest leaves at hand

But she looked up high at the newest leaves

And set off to that promised land

The uphill climb was hard to bare

And at times it seemed too long

But each day she grew a little more

And her efforts soon made her strong

One day she found she stood on top

Of the only world she knew

But now she saw so very far

In a sky of the purest blue

Just then a splendid creature flew

On wings of green and blue

It fluttered past her lofty perch

And it felt like someone she knew

She made a vow that one day she

Would find a way to fly

She would soar and float upon the wind

To the summit of the very sky

That night the wind was cold and damp

So she spun a silken tent

She dreamed of floating in the air

And at last the night was spent

She burst the tent of woven thread

And stretched in the morning light

Then she leaped upon a passing breeze

Into a world of pure delight

As the sun began it’s daily swim

Across the sea of sky

She looked upon the world below

And she became a butterfly

She beheld some others like herself

Fluttering down below

But she looked up and saw the sun

And thought, it’s up that I must go

So higher and higher she climbed the wind

Until the shadows began to grow

The sun soon set upon her day

But undaunted still she flew

And then the stars began to shine

And the moon was bright and new

I see my home among those lights

She thought as she winged her way

With all her might she bent the air

For up there she meant to stay

The golden light of a brand new dawn

Soon rose from the eastern sky

The air was clear and soon grew warm

but there was no butterfly
